history

Gorheim Monastery (view around 1769)

The monastery was founded in 1347. The rule of the order was that of a sister collection between 1347 and the 15th century ; Franciscan terziar nuns lived there from the 15th century until it was abolished as a result of the Habsburg policy towards the Principality of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen in 1782 .

The Hohenzollern monastery of Gorheim, which was formally considered a fiefdom of Austria, was consequently subject to the Habsburg rule according to the Austrian view. The repeal of Gorheim was carried out by the Austrian commissioner Sebastian Biermann, Oberamtmann von Stockach , according to the repeal decree of Emperor Joseph II of January 12, 1782. The property was confiscated and the income allocated to the Austrian religious fund. From this the pensions of the nuns should be paid. Under the name Institut Gorheim , the monastery now accepted former nuns from various abolished monasteries. The library holdings were handed over to the University of Freiburg .

When the Principality of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen received full sovereignty in 1806, the buildings fell to Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. At times they served as an educational institution for girls, as a weapons depot and as barracks. Gorheim belonged to the diocese of Constance until it was awarded to Freiburg in 1821. Monastic life was re-established in 1852 when Gorheim was left to the Jesuits for usufruct. The Jesuit branch remained until 1872. In 1892 Gorheim was left to the Franciscan recollects of the Thuringian Franciscan Province from Fulda, which was booming at the time. In 1894, the Order Province established a theological college in Gorheim to train the next generation of the Order, and in 1911 a new monastery church was built. The university was abolished in 1967 in favor of joint study by the German Franciscans. In 2000 the Franciscans left the monastery.

The parish Herz Jesu in Gorheim and the religious educational media office of the Archdiocese of Freiburg were already in the building. The dean's office Sigmaringen-Meßkirch, the clearing office for the parishes and the branch office of the Archbishop's Archives have been new to the complex since 2009. The educational center has existed since 1979 and is now run by the archdiocese.

Monastery complex

The Gorheim monastery complex was rebuilt and expanded in the 20th century. In 1916 the Gorheim monastery received a gas connection. The owner of the building, the General Catholic Church Fund Hohenzollern, carried out a thorough renovation in 2009.

The altar in the Herz Jesu-Kirche, the monastery church of Gorheim, shows a group of sculptures that were made in the Marmon workshop. In the Herz Jesu Church there is a Herz Jesu altar , a Joseph altar and a sculpture of the Mother of Sorrows . Above the monastery there is an altar of Mary in the forest.
