The Großfurra monastery was a Cistercian monastery in Großfurra in Thuringia . It was created by relocating the Großballhausen monastery and was dissolved during the Reformation. The monastery patron was Saint Boniface .

history

On March 3, 1322, Landgrave Friedrich von Thuringia left the Großballhausen monastery patronage over the parish church of Großfurra with the condition to build a monastery there. The Großfurra monastery was then built at the village church, to which the convent moved in 1326.

The core of the monastery property was 22.5 Hufe real estate in and around Ballhausen, as well as numerous interest rights that belonged to the equipment of the predecessor monastery . In addition, there were smaller possessions around Großfurra which were given to the monastery by various donors in the 15th century. The monastery in Ballhausen and Großfurra owned the church patronage.

The monastery had a relatively close relationship with the Volkenroda monastery , but was not incorporated into it . The monastery was also exempt from the supervision of the archdeacon in Jechaburg .

As the Reformation began , the pressure on the monastery increased. Most of the nuns left the monastery as a result of the Peasants' War . Only the prioress and three nuns stayed there. As a result, the Wurmb zu Thamsbrück family tried to move in the monastery property, which prompted Duke Georg of Saxony to place the monastery under the protection of the Office of Sangerhausen . The economic situation of the monastery deteriorated rapidly and property had to be pledged several times.

The abolition of the monastery was announced on the first Sunday after November 7th, 1538. On November 21, 1538 the monastery was converted into a state domain of the duke by the magistrate Augustin Buchheyt . Between the Duke's administration, the Wurmb zu Großfurra and Wurmb zu Thamsbrück families, there was a long-standing legal dispute over ownership of the goods. This was not finished until 1694.

The preserved village church of Großfurra served as the monastery church. The monastery mill and the farm buildings were already in the 16./17. Torn down in the 19th century. The enclosure to the west of the church was demolished in 1689. Only the Boniface fountain and a monastery pond remained.
