The Herrera Monastery (Santa María de Herrera; Ferraria) is a former Cistercian abbey in the Montes Obarenes 11 km southeast of Miranda de Ebro in the province of Burgos in Castile-León in Spain , right on the border with La Rioja and the province of Álava in of the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country .
history
The monastery was first mentioned in 1044 under the name of San Martín de Ferrara. In 1169, the Cistercians moved into a complex in Sajazarra (Saya), where an abbey was built in 1171, which received major donations and moved to Herrera in 1176. In the monastery suspension ( disentailment ) under the government of Juan Álvarez Mendizábal the monastery in 1835, was dissolved. In 1897 Discalced Carmelites moved into the monastery, which they left in 1905. After that there was settlement by Trappists until 1921 , and Camaldolese followed in 1923 , who still inhabit the monastery today.
Buildings and plant
The walled monastery is isolated. The refectory is used as a church as the earlier church is in ruins.
