history

Remains of the chapel of the monastery

In 1144 the monastery was founded by Archbishop Eskil von Lund as the immediate daughter of Cîteaux . From Herrevad the establishment went from Tvis Abbey , Abbey Holme and Løgum Abbey from. After the monastery was withdrawn by the Crown in 1565, the complex fell into disrepair. Towards the end of the 16th century the monastery was demolished and the material was used to build the Caroli Church in Malmö . After Skåne passed over to Sweden, a still existing castle was built in which Tycho Brahe observed a supernova . The monastery area was later used for military purposes by the Scanian hussar regiment, as a depot and by the air force school. The castle now serves as a hotel.

The church, begun in 1158, was a three-aisled, 53 m long basilica in the bound system in the Romanesque style made of sandstone of the Fontenay type . It was rebuilt from bricks after a fire in 1291. The enclosure was to the right of the church, only one room (sacristy or armarium) is still completely preserved. The gate entrance and a wing of the farm yard have also been preserved.
