The Tvis Monastery ( tutta vallis = the safe valley) is a former Cistercian abbey in Denmark . It was a few kilometers southeast of Holstebro in Jutland on a small island between the rivers Storå and Tvis Å.
history
The monastery was founded in 1163 by the Jarl of Jutland Buris Henriksen, a son of Henrik Skadelår , who gave the monastery considerable property around the town of Holstebro. The Tvis Monastery was a subsidiary of the Herrevad Monastery in Skåne (today Sweden ), which in turn is a filiation of Cîteaux . The first monks also came from Herrevad. In the following centuries the monastery received further property. In 1308, King Erik Menved confirmed the monastery's privileges.
The existence of the monastery ended during the Reformation , the year 1547 is given for this. The property passed to the last Bishop of Ribe, Olaf Munk. The last monks were allowed to stay until they died. In 1614 the estate came to Mogens Ulfeldt through the marriage of Olaf Munk's granddaughter Anna Munk , and later to other noble families.
The monastery church is said to have been demolished in 1698. A parish church was set up in the west wing, but it was also demolished in 1887 after the new parish church was built. Today there are no remains other than the foundation walls.
