Henrik Skadelår (* around 1090; † June 4, 1134 in the Battle of Fodevig , Skåne ) was a Danish prince. His nickname means that he had a crippled thigh (Skade = damage; lår = thigh).

Life

His parents were Sven the Crusader and his wife Florine of Burgundy , daughter of Duke Odo I of Burgundy and his wife Sibylle.

He is portrayed as someone whose crippling has exacerbated and who has always felt disadvantaged. Margarethe Fredkulla , the wife of King Nils , tried to secure peace through marriage policy, and thus also to include Henrik. She married him to her niece Ingrid Ragnvaldsdatter and at the same time her niece Ingeborg to Knud Lavard . She placed great emphasis on these connections and controlled the two brides with a quarter of the Swedish possessions she owned from her father. So Henrik came to possessions in Sweden. For his son Magnus Henriksson they became the starting point for his quest for the Swedish crown. Henrik also had extensive land in Denmark.

He was an enemy of his cousin Knud Lavard , whom he disliked his power and prestige. His wife fled with a lover and he had to pick her up in Ålborg and bring her back. He blamed Knud for this insult. He ordered King Nils to invite Knud to a meeting in Ribe so that he could respond to the accusation that he was harming the king and the kingdom. Knud refused. So Henrik continued to try to take the king against Knud. Henrik was the actual originator of a conspiracy against Knud and was also the driving force behind the deliberations. He designated Magnus Nilsson to assassinate. This took place on January 7, 1131 in the forest of Haraldsted after Knud had been lured there with cunning and under a pretext. Now the king was forced to expel his son from the country for the assassination. But Henrik and many others were able to persuade the king to bring his son back. The result was a violent civil war in which Erik II took sides against King Nils and his son Magnus. During these outbreaks of violence, Henrik hoped to win the king's name. But in the decisive battle at Fodevig on June 4, 1134, one of the great battles of the early Middle Ages, both he and Magnus and a large number of their followers fell. King Nils fled to Schleswig , where the residents avenged the death of Knud Lavard and killed him.
