Honau Monastery
The Honau Monastery , also Honau Abbey , was a Schottenkloster in Honau , a district of Rheinau in the Ortenau district in Baden-Württemberg .
history
In 720 a Schottenkloster was founded on a Rhine island near Rheinau. It belonged to the diocese of Strasbourg and was incorporated into the jurisdiction of Renchen (Amt Oberkirch ). Until 749, the Etichonen secured the monastery property, which was called "Hoinaugia". Further names over the years were "Hoinowa" (870), "Honaugia" (1119), "Honauwia" (1199) and "Honow" (1268). In the year 884 the goods were confirmed in over 40 Alsatian communities by Emperor Karl the Dicken . In the 11th century the monastery was converted into a canon and in 1290 it was moved to Rhinau on the left bank of the Rhine . In 1398 the monastery was moved from Rheinau to Alt St. Peter in Strasbourg.
Monks of the Irish Scottish Mission brought their worship to the kingdom of the Franks , where, among other things, they founded the Honau Monastery around 720. It was dedicated to St. Michael and a kind of mission center for the Ortenau . The monastery owned, among others, in Niederschopfheim .
