Itarare Monastery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Monastery Itarare (lat. Abbatia BMV de Fatima ; port. Mosteiro Nossa Senhora de Fátima ) is a Cistercian - Abbey in Itararé , Brazil , diocese Itapeva .

History and present

The Itararé Cistercian convent in the city of the same name in the Brazilian state of São Paulo was founded in 1951 as the first subsidiary of the Bavarian Cistercian Abbey of Oberschönenfeld, initially in Ribeirão Vermelho do Sul , a remote place in the subtropics. The lack of water due to the location in the fully arid climate caused the resettlement to Itararé in 1963. Two years later the monastery became an independent priory . As early as 1968 it could be elevated to an abbey . Other monasteries in Brazil followed, some of which were later also elevated to an abbey. Prioress M. Stefania Köbele from Oberschönenfeld was ordained the first abbess . After the first Brazilian abbess Bernarda Russo Miranda retired for reasons of age, Prioress Maria Conceição Borges was the administrator of the abbey since 2010 and was then elected as today's abbess. The monastery is the Abbot of Itaporanga . Today the Itararé monastery complex includes two kindergartens and a school. The sisters also devote themselves to agriculture and beekeeping.
