The Koronowo Monastery (Corona Mariae, German: Krone Marias) is a former Cistercian abbey in Poland . It is located in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship , 24 km north of Bydgoszcz (formerly Bromberg), in the municipality of Koronowo (Krone an der Brahe).

history

Koronowo Monastery was founded as the daughter of Sulejów Monastery , which in turn was a daughter of the Morimond Primary Abbey , initially in Byszew ( Gmina Koronowo ) by the Duke of Kujawy in 1256 , but later subordinated to Leubus Monastery . In 1288 it was moved to Smeysche (now Koronowo ). The monastery was closed in 1833 (according to other sources as early as 1819).

The high altar

The church, the construction of which began in 1289, is a Gothic brick building, is a three-aisled cruciform basilica. Presbytery and north nave wall date from the end of the 13th century. The nave is occupied by chapels closed on three sides. The east side of the three-aisled choir is closed in a straight line. The church is vaulted with cross and star vaults from the 14th century, which are related to those of the church in Pelplin (Dehio). The church was partially renovated in the second half of the 17th century. In addition to the baroque style of the windows, this particularly affected the roof turrets. A barrel vault was installed in the central nave. A restoration took place at the end of the 19th century. The church was founded in 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI. raised to the rank of a minor basilica . The cloister is to the right of the church. It dates from the 17th and 18th centuries, as does the baroque abbot's house.
