The monastery of Kutjevo , also known as Gotó (Vallis honesta de Gotho), was a Cistercian abbey in Croatia . It was located in Kutjevo in the Croatian Slavonia countryside , 23 km north-northeast of Požega .
history
The monastery was founded in 1232. It was a subsidiary of the Zirc Monastery in Hungary from the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The Cistercians also founded the viticulture that is still cultivated today. The monastery was closed after the Turkish invasion in 1521 (or 1529) and then destroyed. In 1689 the monastery property was lent by Emperor Leopold I to the Zagreb canon Ivan Babić, who was appointed titular abbot . In 1698 it was settled by Jesuits who stayed until 1773. In 1882 the estate was acquired by Vjenceslav Turković and Franjo Türk and a significant wine production was established. After the Second World War it was run as a socialist company.
Buildings and plant
The existing complex was built by the Jesuits in the 18th century on the ruins of the Cistercian monastery.
