The Maria Hilf monastery in Bornheim existed from 1883 to 1989 as the monastery of the Cellitinnen , who maintained a retreat house , a children's home and, most recently, a retirement home in the building . The listed building was originally built as a wallpaper factory. Since the monastery was closed, the building has housed the municipal kindergarten and an institution of the Rhineland Regional Council . In May 2011 it changed to the Roggendorf GbR.

history

In 1838, the entrepreneur and Mayor of Bornheim, Franz Witthof, built a wallpaper factory on the site of what would later become the monastery, to which, after his election as Mayor of Bornheim in 1864, he also moved the offices of the mayor's office. He held the office until his death in 1870.

His widow Katharina Witthof sold the factory and the extensive property in 1883 to the Cologne Order of Sisters of the Cellites, thereby fulfilling her and her family's wish to build a monastery in Bornheim. The monastery was officially founded in October 1883 and the first sisters settled in Bornheim. In the following decades, the monastery was rebuilt several times and another wing and additional extensions were added. At that time it housed a kindergarten, a holiday home, a retreat house with a housekeeping school and, most recently, an old people's home.

In 1989 the Maria Hilf nursing home, the last facility of the nuns in the monastery, moved to Brunnenallee in Roisdorf. The complex now housed the municipal kindergarten and facilities of the Rhineland Regional Association.

In May 2011, the Bonn Roggendorf GbR acquired the former monastery as part of a foreclosure auction and built apartments as well as a boarding house and a theater here. After two unsuccessful attempts, first with the "Theater im Kloster" and the "Kultkapelle", the theater business was permanently stopped.

In the meantime, the monastery is essentially only used as a boarding house and by the city of Bornheim for the adult education center.

The former "nurses' home" was completely renovated in 2012 and 2013 and is now used for residential purposes

Sister Secunda

The best-known religious in the monastery was Sister Maria Secunda (* 1878), who came to Maria Hilf monastery in Bornheim in 1909 and worked here until her death on July 2, 1957. Her special commitment and her loving manner in dealing with the sick entrusted to her earned her the nickname "Samaritan from the foothills" and led to her being given honorary citizenship of the city of Bornheim on June 13, 1957. The street at the monastery was named after her.

Monument protection

The building is a historical monument. It is listed under number 64 in the list of monuments of the city of Bornheim.
