The Matallana Monastery ( Monasterio de Santa María de Matallana ) is a former Cistercian abbey in the province of Valladolid in the Autonomous Community of Castile and León in Spain .
location
The ruins of the monastery are in the north of the municipality of Villalba de los Alcores , around 20 km east of the small town of Medina de Rioseco , at an altitude of around 785 m above sea level. d. M.
history
The monastery, which may have been founded in the 11th century, was donated by Don Tello Pérez Meneses and his wife Gotroda in 1173 and occupied by the monastery of La Crête , the second daughter of the primary abbey of Morimond . The construction of the new church, built in the 13th century, was initiated by Queen Beatrix of Spain (1205–1235), the wife of King Ferdinand III. , promoted. The monastery came to an end during the dissolution of the monastery by the government of Juan Álvarez Mendizábal around 1835 and was then abandoned (see also Disamortization in Spain ).
Buildings and plant
Remains of the three-aisled church with transept and the cloister ( claustro ) on the south side have been preserved up to a height of approx. 2 m. The donors' graves were located in the monastery church (today in the Archaeological Museum of Catalonia ).
Todays use
Today the complex and a neighboring finca house a natural history information center for the province of Valladolid. A pigeon house ( palomar ) and a newly established cheese dairy can also be seen.
