The monastery La Crête (La Chreste, Crista alba) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Bourdons-sur-Rognon in the Haute-Marne department , Grand Est region , in France , in the Rognon Valley , around 30 km northeast of Chaumont .

history

Monastery wall and dovecote

The monastery was founded in 1121 by Simon II, Lord of Clefmont, in the border area between France and the Holy Roman Empire and settled by the primary abbey of Morimond , whose second subsidiary it was. Previously, a first attempt at founding the company in 1118 in nearby La vielle-Crête had failed. The founding abbot was Baudoin. The church is believed to have been built by 1150. The monastery built a forge about a kilometer away, as well as other forges in Wassy and les Mathons. Together with the Counts of Champagne, the villages of Chantraines, Bourdons and Puits-des-Mèzes were founded. From the 16th century onwards, the monastery, which had fallen in Coming , suffered from the plague and the wars of religion . During the French Revolution it was dissolved in 1791, the church and enclosure were broken off. The monastery was converted into a farm.
