Écurey Monastery

The monastery of Vaux-en-Ornois (Valles de Ornesio) is a former Cistercian abbey in the town of Saint-Joire in the Meuse region Grand Est in France . It is located around 17 kilometers southeast of Ligny-en-Barrois in the Ornain valley .

history

The monastery was founded between 1130 and 1133 from the monastery of La Crête on land donated by Count Ébal von Montfort and Count Thibaud II of Champagne and thus belonged to the filiation of the primary abbey of Morimond . It founded the Écurey monastery as a daughter in 1144 . From the beginning, the monastery acquired an important domain which included the Ormenson estates in St-Joire, Fontenoy, Plein-Lieu, Champ-Larippe and St-Antoine. After multiple destructions, u. a. in the religious wars in 1568, 1575 and in the Thirty Years' War , the church was rebuilt in 1761. During the French Revolution , the monastery was closed in 1791.

Buildings and plant

Apart from a few scattered stones, nothing has survived from the monastery complex. A forge was built on the monastery grounds in 1813 .
