The Écurey Monastery (Écurey-en-Barrois; Escuraium) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Montiers-sur-Saulx in the Meuse department , Grand Est region , in France .
history
The monastery was founded in 1144 by Geoffroy III. , donated to the Lord of Joinville, settled from the monastery of Les Vaux-en-Ornois and thus belonged to the filiation of the Morimond primary abbey . It set up the granges Corberoy, Baali, Froillet, Montionval, Thonnance (in Joinville ), les Ronchères, la Chapelle, la Grange-Allard, La Haye, le Haut-Bois, la Porte and La Forge and in Montiers Montgérard, Aigremont, la Tanchette and Grignancourt a. The abbey built iron processing in Froillet and Rachecourt. The abbey was rebuilt in the 18th century. During the French Revolution , the monastery was closed in 1791, largely demolished and converted into a farm. A foundry was built in 1834 .
Buildings and plant
The abbot's house has been preserved from the renovation in the 18th century. The guest house dates from 1746. The pigeon house has a spiral staircase. The main courtyard is closed in a semicircle by a balustrade. The church of St-Pierre-ès-Liens in Montiers-sur-Saulx has preserved several pieces of furniture, including two paintings by Baltazard from 1775 (Saint Bernard and the Annunciation). Part of the monastery library is also kept in this community.
