The Moreilles Monastery (Beata Maria de Moroliis) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Moreilles in the Vendée department , Pays de la Loire , in France . It was about 11 km southeast of Luçon , in the middle of the Marais Poitevin .
history
The monastery was founded as a Benedictine monastery by the Lords of Triaize before 1109 and joined the Cistercian order in 1152 as a subsidiary of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . It founded the Bois-Grolland monastery as early as 1109 . Together with five other abbeys, it was also involved in the draining of the Marais Poitevin, for example through the construction of a canal in 1199. Later the monastery fell into Kommende . Cardinal Richelieu was one of the abbots of the Commendati . The monastery was destroyed during the Wars of Religion in the 16th century, but was reopened in 1699. It came to an end in the French Revolution .
Buildings and plant
The walls of the abbey church, rebuilt in 1699, have been preserved. The stables and the building of the commander's abbots still stand. Today guest rooms are offered.
