Oberweimar Abbey
The monastery Oberweimar was 1244-1525 a monastery first the Cistercians , from 1500 to the Benedictine nuns in Oberweimar in Thuringia .
history
Count Hermann II of Orlamünde founded the nunnery of St. Peter and Paul in 1244 as a burial place and to accommodate female members of the family. In the 15th century the convent was based on the Benedictine Peterskloster Erfurt , which was part of the reform movement of the Bursfeld congregation . In 1500 it was accepted into the Benedictine order . In 1525 the monastery was closed. The second monastery church of St. Peter and Paul , completed in 1361, is still on site ( Klosterweg) , as is the former monastery warehouse. The Protestant parish is a member of the Community of Evangelical Cistercian Heirs in Germany .
The mystic Lukardis von Oberweimar lived in the monastery around 1300, and in the 16th century the nun Florentina von Oberweimar, made famous by Martin Luther .
