According to tradition, the apostle Andrew stopped in the city of Anchialos (today Pomorie) on the way to Kiev . References to monastic life extend into the 3rd to 4th centuries. Century back. The monastery was founded by Greek colonists in the 7th century and was completely destroyed during the advance by Ottoman troops after 1458. The courtyard of a Turkish landlord who was appointed landowner ( Turkish Çiftlik ) was built on the monastery grounds .

According to legend, this Turkish feudal lord named Selim Bej fell ill with an incurable disease. One night he dreamed that there was a healing spring in the yard of his estate. The next day he had a dig in the yard and came across a marble slab with the relief of George the Dragon Slayer. A small spring rose from under the plate. He drank from it, recovered and then converted to Christianity with his family . He donated his land (around 3800  decares ) to the new monastery "Sveti Georgi", which was to be built.

Today's monastery church was built in 1856 on the foundations of a much older church. The marble slab with the relief of St. George mentioned in the legend was worked into the masonry above the church portal. The bell tower is a little off the beaten track, directly above the holy spring. In the basement of the bell tower, believers can drink from the spring and bottle the water. In the monastery courtyard there is a small garden with vegetables for personal use. There is a regular bus service from the old town with a stop at the monastery grounds.

Since 2004 the monastery has been led by the priest monk Hierotheos ( Bulgarian Йеромонах Йеротей Jeromonach Jerotej ). Hierotheos was appointed bishop ( Bulgarian Епископ episkop ) in 2014. His title is "Hierotheos, Bishop of Agatopol" ( Епископ Агатополски Йеротей ). Agatopol is the Greek name of Ahtopol , a small town on the southwestern Black Sea coast of Bulgaria.
