Achtopol [ ɐxtɔpoɫ ] ( bulg . Ахтопол , Greek Αγαθούπολη Agatopol ) is one of the smallest towns in Bulgaria .

location

The city is located on the southwest Black Sea coast , 87 kilometers from Burgas and only a few kilometers from the border with Turkey . The distance to Sofia is 477 kilometers. Ahtopol is surrounded by the cities of Sinemorets, Sozopol , Resowo and Primorsko .

history

Archaeological finds show that there was already 2000 BC. A settlement existed where Akhtopol is today. In the 6th century BC Ahtopol was a Thracian port.

Another 200 years later the settlement was an important Greek city under the name Agatopolis . Later the Romans conquered the city and made it a fortress. The city walls they built lasted until the 16th century. They had previously suffered from the Ottoman conquest of the city. Eventually they were almost completely destroyed by a major earthquake.

At the end of the 18th century, the now ruling Ottomans relocated Greek sailors and shipbuilders from the Crimean peninsula to Ahtopol. There they built ships for the Ottoman Navy and for private individuals and also trained sailors. The Russian army captured Ahtopol with the frigate Flora on July 24, 1829 during the Russo-Turkish War . In the Peace of Adrianople it was agreed that the city should remain in the Ottoman Empire. In 1913 the Ottoman and Greek governments negotiated a treaty that provided for the withdrawal of Greek residents from Ahtopol. In their place came Bulgarians from Eastern Thrace .

In 1918 a city fire destroyed almost the entire city. Only a few houses in the northern part of the peninsula and directly on the sea have been preserved.

From 1984 to 1990 Soviet sounding rockets of the type M-100 were launched south of Ahtopol .

The city has given its name to Ahtopol Peak , a mountain on Livingston Island in Antarctica , since 2005 .

tourism

The city is a resort and is located on a rocky peninsula at the foot of the Strandscha Mountains, a Bulgarian national park. Climatically, the place is characterized by a higher air and water temperature than the average in Bulgaria. Akhtopol has a two-kilometer-long, fine sandy beach, a cultural center and a natural harbor with a landing stage for small vehicles .
