Tsarevo ([ tsarɛvo ], English transcription Tsarevo , Bulgarian Царево ) is a city and administrative center of the same municipality in southeastern Bulgaria , in the oblast Burgas . Tsarevo lies on the Black Sea and has a small port. The city is located about 70 km south of Burgas and 7 km north of Akhtopol .
Naming
The city got its name because of its foundation by a tsar. Over time, Tsarevo had different names:
- Tsarevo, Wasiliky (bulg .: Царево, Василику) (12th century)
- Wasilikos (bulg .: Василикос) (1352)
- Wasiliko (bulg .: Василико) (until 1934)
- Tsarevo (bulg .: Царево) (until 1950)
- Michurin (Bulgarian: Мичурин) (until 1991) (after Ivan Michurin )
- Tsarevo (bulg .: Царево) (since 1992)
history
Archaeologists have discovered remains from late antiquity in the Black Sea three kilometers north of the city (at the level of the Arapja campsite (bulg. Арапя)). During archaeological underwater explorations , Welisar Welkow and his team found amphorae from the 4th – 6th centuries. Discovered in the 5th century AD and imported ceramics from North Africa, Syria and Constantinople .
With the old name of the city Wasilikos , the city is first mentioned by the Arab geographer Indrisi in the 12th century AD. Wasilikos harbor was also opened in the 15th-16th centuries. Century mentioned in writing. The Turkish traveler Evliya Çelebi , who called it Wasilikos Burgas in 1662 , also tells about the small fortress on the southern cape of Tsarevo . According to him, Burgas points to a Greek fortress. In the Ottoman tax registers from the second half of the 17th century and in the 18th century Wasiliko listed.
In Tsarevo there is a Chitalishte with the name "Georgi Kondolow".
In 2012, archaeological excavations took place in Tsarevo for the first time. These were led by the archaeologist Milen Nikolow from the Historical Museum in Burgas . The remains of an unknown Thracian city were localized, which from the end of the 4th century, beginning of the 3rd century BC. Until the end of the 1st century was settled.

Tsarevo lies on a bay. On the southern peninsula there are the remains of a medieval fortress. There is another late antique / medieval fortress on the summit Papija, in the neighboring Strandscha Mountains.
