The monastery, consecrated to St. Michael, was founded by Count Helmuni, a member of the local noble family of the Fagana, towards the end of the 8th century in what is now Wasentegernbach . In Freising documents in the 10th century one writes that the monastery was occupied by an abbot, 6 Benedictine monks and 6 fratres. The property is said to have comprised 700 days of work .
