Val-St-Lambert Monastery is a former Cistercian abbey in Belgium .
location
The former monastery is located in the municipality of Seraing in the province of Liège , around 13 km southwest of Liège.
history
The monastery was probably founded in 1187 on a foundation by Hugo von Pierrepont, the bishop of Liège, as a subsidiary of Signy Abbey in the Ardennes in France, which in turn was a subsidiary of the Igny Abbey founded in 1126 . It thus belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . Construction of the monastery began in 1202. The monastery was closed during the French Revolution in 1796. The buildings have been used by the Cristalleries du Val-Saint-Lambert crystal factory since 1826 .
Plant and buildings
The monastery was restored in the second half of the 18th century. The monastery church was demolished in 1802. A monastery wing from the 13th century has been preserved (the chapter house and scriptorium from around 1290 have been restored). In Val-St-Lambert is the summer palace of the Prince-Bishops of Liège, which used to belong to the abbey and which was classified as a Historic Monument in 1973, and which houses the Crystal Museum.
