The monastery was founded in 1365 by Franz Münzmeister, a Bamberg citizen. It was dissolved in 1803 in the course of secularization . In 1806 the last 13 nuns also had to leave the monastery. The church was used for military purposes. The monastery, which had served as a hospital, was demolished around 1874. In 1923 the monastery church was restored. In 1926 the monastery was rebuilt from the holy grave, on September 3rd, Dominican Sisters from St. Ursula in Augsburg moved into the monastery. In 1930 the convent was raised again to an independent priory .
The monastery is known for its weaving and embroidery, a tradition that goes back to the 15th century and was taken up again by the nuns in 1926.
Monastery church
The original legend says that the church (before the monastery) was built as an atonement for a host robbery allegedly committed in 1314 by the monastery of St. Gangolf on the site of the host found. The church was built with a single nave, has a light-filled choir and a wooden gallery in the west. Parts of the former furnishings are in the church of St. Gangolf in Bamberg and in the local diocesan museum . The grave of the lay sister Maria Columba Schonath, who was given the stigmata , has been located in the south side chapel since 1787 .
