St. Marienstern monastery brewery
The St. Marienstern monastery brewery ( Upper Sorbian Klóšterska piwarnja Marijina hwězda ) was a brewery in the Cistercian monastery of St. Marienstern am Klosterwasser in Panschwitz-Kuckau in Upper Lusatia, Saxony .
history
In 1700 the monastery brewery was founded on the site of the abbey . The beer was mainly brewed for Lent in the monastery , according to the principle of liquids, fasting does not break . When the monastery was granted limited brewing rights , it was also able to supply the surrounding inns with the monastery beer.
The monastery brewery existed for over 270 years, survived all crises and raw material shortages, but not the second wave of expropriations and nationalizations in the GDR . In 1973 the brewery had to close due to government pressure.
Severely disabled people live in the monastery today. Some historical facilities have been opened to the public.
The St. Marienstern Klosterbräu has been restored since 1993 . It is brewed from the town brewery Wittichenau in wage brewing process . The Klosterbräu is available in the monastery shop.
