The Berlin Boys 'Choir has existed since 1993. It emerged from the former boys' choir of the St. Hedwig Cathedral in Berlin . 140 boys from 10 nations are currently singing in the choir. The current repertoire of the boys' choir includes symphonic literature, opera parts , musicals , oratorios , musical masses , German and Latin motets , madrigals , Christmas carols and church music , especially that of Johann Sebastian Bach.

history

The origin of the choir goes back to the founding time of the Diocese of Berlin . A boys' choir in St. Hedwig's Cathedral is first mentioned in the archives in the 19th century. The reigning from 1934 to 1963, Director of Music of St. Hedwig's Cathedral Karl Forster revived this tradition again.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall , Karl-Ludwig Hecht, at that time the choirmaster of the boys 'choir at St. Hedwig's Cathedral, as well as Regina and Fred Lochmann founded the boys' choir with this new name. The choir has its artistic home in the Stechlinsee primary school in Berlin-Friedenau .

musical direction

The musical direction of the choir is Karl-Ludwig Hecht. He is a trained church musician and studied school music. He also completed training as a trumpeter and conductor at the University of Music in Würzburg .

From 1983 he was cathedral choirmaster of St. Kilian's Cathedral in Würzburg before he was appointed director of the boys' choir of St. Hedwig's Cathedral and director of the archbishop's church music school in West Berlin in 1986 .

Well-known choir members

The presenter , actor and musician Pete Dwojak was a member for many years and also appeared as a soloist at the Christmas concerts from 1988 to 1995 in the Berlin Philharmonic .
