The boys' school in Fürstenwalde / Spree (until 2007: Städtisches Gymnasium Fürstenwalde ) is a former barracks building in Holzstrasse 1a that has been used as a school since the 19th century . From 1891 to 2007 an independent school was located in the building without interruption. Since August 2007 the second school location of the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium Fürstenwalde has been located on the site .
history
In 1891 a barracks building for the Prussian army was built on the then northern outskirts of Fürstenwalde / Spree , in Holzstrasse . At the end of the 19th century, the lack of school places in Prussia was very great, which meant that instead of soldiers, students moved into the building. In this way, one of the first general education schools in Fürstenwalde, the Fürstenwalde boys' school, came into being . The boys 'school was built next to the Fürstenwalde girls' school, today's Theodor Fontane primary school . Due to great spatial constraints in the building, it was expanded in 1898. In 1904, the first gymnasium in Fürstenwalde was built directly on the other side of Holzstrasse, which is still used today by the Fontane elementary school and various sports clubs.
From 1946 to 1962, Central School 1 for boys was located in the premises . With the introduction of the GDR's education system , the school was renamed Polytechnische Oberschule (POS) 1 Fürstenwalde . The extended secondary school Werner-Seelenbinder Fürstenwalde emerged from the 1st POS at the end of the 1970s . The school building was expanded again in 1984 with a new wing.
Municipal high school "Werner Seelenbinder" Fürstenwalde
In the course of German reunification , the West German education system was also introduced in the new federal states . The Werner-Seelenbinder-Gymnasium Fürstenwalde developed from the EOS in August 1991 , which was supported by the city of Fürstenwalde.
The school yard was converted into a learning and leisure area in 2006. Due to the falling number of pupils in Fürstenwalde, the municipal high school was closed at the end of the 2006/2007 school year in July 2007. In August 2007, the Fürstenwalde district grammar school took over the former municipal grammar school and has since operated the Holzstrasse 1a building as a second location.
