Inn Kneitinger on Regensburg's Arnulfsplatz

The Kneitinger Brewery is a Bavarian brewery on Arnulfsplatz in Regensburg . Today the company is run by a non-profit foundation .

History of the brewery

In 1590 the existence of a brewery on Regensburg's Arnulfsplatz, where the restaurant known as “ der Knei ” is still located, was mentioned in a document for the first time. The actual beginnings of the brewery are likely to go back even further, as the brewery is said to have been founded around 1530. Over the years the brewery was sold again and again. The penultimate owner before the Kneitinger family was the brewer Johann Georg Islinger. In 1836 he bought a piece of land on the Galgenberg in order to build a summer beer cellar and run a pub , today's beer garden "Kneitinger Keller". Soon afterwards he handed over the property to his son Joseph Franz Islinger, who died in 1861. His widow Maria Islinger initially managed the brewery alone. In 1862, the brewery and cellar came into the possession of her second husband Johann Kneitinger I through remarriage. He came from Abensberg and learned the trade of master brewer in his own business. In 1865 he passed his journeyman's examination with distinction and reorganized the brewery. The Kneitinger Bock beer he brewed became a specialty of the house back then and is still today.

After the death of Johann Kneitinger I, his son, Johann Kneitinger II, took over the business, refined his father's recipes and was extremely successful with the bock beer. In October 1892 he was the founder of the restaurant on Arnulfsplatz, which is now considered the Kneitinger's ancestral home. Johann Kneitinger II died on September 15, 1923 and the company fell to his young son Johann Kneitinger III, born in 1899, who had studied brewing in Munich. In 1945 the restaurant in the summer cellar was destroyed and rebuilt after the end of the war with considerable investments. Johann Kneitinger III. continued the company in the old family tradition until his death in 1975. After his death, the Kneitinger went to his wife Sofie Kneitinger, who was awarded the Matthäus Runtinger Medal in 1980 by the city of Regensburg .

Since Sofie had no heirs (her marriage to Johann had remained childless), she decided to transfer her assets to a charitable foundation called the “Hans and Sofie Kneitinger Foundation”. The foundation was established on December 5, 1985. The foundation expanded the company by selling land from the inherited private property of Sofie Kneitinger and thus was able to finance the acquisition of further restaurants. In addition, the parent company on Arnulfsplatz was renovated and modernized for a seven-digit DM amount from the proceeds of the property sales. Sofie Kneitinger died in 1991, after which the brewery was transferred to the foundation after 115 years of family ownership. On the one hand, the Hans-und-Sofie-Kneitinger-Foundation is heavily involved in regional child and elderly care, in particular by supporting children and elderly homes . On the other hand, other historic buildings and traditional restaurants are also being bought and renovated.

Types of beer

The Kneitinger brewery not only produces a light beer ("Edel-Pils"; 5.2% vol .; 89% of the brewing volume) made according to the Pilsener brewing method, as well as a dark beer, the "Dunkel Export" (5.5% vol.), as well as the traditional dark "Kneitinger Bock" (6.8% vol.). In the meantime, a light beer ("Sommerbier 1861"; 4.9% vol.) And an alcohol-free beer (less than 0.5% vol.) Are produced.
