Knights of Rizal Award

The Knights of Rizal , Spanish : "Orden de Caballeros de Rizal", German : "Rizalritter" are the only state order of knights in the Philippines . The order was founded to honor and uphold the ideals of the Filipino national hero José Rizal (full name José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda). Membership, ranks and insignia are recognized in the Honors Code of the Philippines as official honors of the republic. The award ranks eighth in the order of civil orders, decorations, and medals of the Philippines.

history

The order was founded by nine founders under the direction of the later first Philippine Police President of Manila , Colonel Antonio Torres on December 30, 1911 to commemorate the martyrdom of the Filipino folk hero José Rizal. December 30th is the anniversary of the execution of José Rizal, which took place in 1896, and is now celebrated as the national holiday "Rizal Day". Exactly one year after it was founded, a state burial took place with his bones moved from his family home in Binondo to Luneta (now Rizal Park), Manila. On this occasion, members of the order took over the guard of honor. Since that day, the order has played a prominent role in various commemorations for José Rizal.

The Congressman Manuel Zola from Cebu brought in 1951 a push in Congress to grant the order a "Legislative Charter". Senators Enrique Magalona , Lorenzo Sumulong , Esteban Abada , Emiliano Tria Tirona , Camilo Osías , Geronima Pécson , José Avelino and Ramon Torres also supported this move in the Senate. The legislative decree was passed by the then President on June 14, 1951 as "Republic Act No. 646 "came into force and the order, which has existed under private law since 1911, was converted into a" body corporate and politic "institution. In continental European law, this status roughly corresponds to a public corporation .

Supreme Council

The Legislative Decree defines the Order as a non-sectarian, neutral, non-racist, civil, patriotic and cultural organization. Filipino diplomats have been permitted to wear the insignia since then. As also stipulated in the legal decree, the administration and management of the order are in the hands of the “Supreme Council”, a board of directors with nine members.

activities

In contrast to the other orders in the Philippines and many international orders of merit, the Knights of Rizal are an active order. Membership not only confers privileges, but also demands personal commitment from members. In addition to the work at official and diplomatic memorial events and the Philippine Independence Day, the Order is also committed to helping Filipino youth around the world, for example through the annual National Rizal Youth Leadership Institute Conference and the Middle East and Africa Region Inter-School Academic Talent and Skills Competition. As part of the worldwide expansion of the order, international humanitarian projects and actions are also being implemented today.

Privileges

In person and in writing, members of the Order are officially addressed as "Sir". The rank in the order is indicated by appropriate additions to the name. Partners of the members are officially addressed as "Lady". On the occasion of the order, the order's insignia and uniform are worn.
