José Avelino

José Dera Avelino (born August 5, 1890 in Calbayog City , Samar , † July 21, 1986 ) was a Filipino politician .

biography

After attending school, he first studied at the Ateneo de Manila and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He completed a subsequent postgraduate study of law at the University of the Philippines with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and worked as a lawyer after his admission in 1934 . He later earned a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the University of Santo Tomas .

He had already started his political career in 1917 as a councilor ( Municipal Councilor ) in his native Calbayog and was a member of the city council until 1919. In 1921 he was elected a member of the House of Representatives and represented the 1st constituency of the Samar Province in this until 1928 .

He was then elected a member of the Senate in 1928 and represented the then 9th Senate electoral district for Leyte and Samar until 1934. After his re-election in 1934 he was leader of the majority faction ( Majority Floor Leader ) until the end of the legislative period in 1935 and for some time after the Death of José Clarin also President of the Senate pro tempore .

After the end of World War II and sovereignty on July 4, 1946, he was again elected Senator and was President of the Senate from 1946 to February 1949. He was also chairman of the traditional Liberal Party from January 19, 1946 to May 8, 1949 .

In the presidential election on November 8, 1949, he ran for the office of President of the Philippines . With 11.85 of the votes he was more than clearly defeated by the elected President Elpidio Quirino (50.93 percent) and the runner-up José P. Laurel (37.22 percent). His candidate for the office of vice president was the then majority leader in the Senate Vicente Francisco .

After leaving the Senate in 1953, he retired from political life and worked as a lawyer until his death.
