Gil J. Puyat

Gil J. Puyat (born September 1, 1907 , † March 23, 1980 ) was a Filipino university professor , politician and businessman .

biography

The son of Don Gonzalo Puyat, one of the first large Filipino entrepreneurs, studied economics at the University of the Philippines after completing school and also gained experience in financial operations, capital, production and work management in his father's company.

After graduating, he later became a professor of economics at the University of the Philippines and at the same time also became a member of the Rotary Club of Manila .

His entrepreneurial acumen and foresight in running family businesses caught the attention of then President Manuel Quezon during a time when the country was predominantly agricultural and Quezon was advocating industrialization . 1940 Puyat was therefore of President Quezon at the age of just 33 years, the Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration ( College of Business Administration appointed) of the University of the Philippines and thus became the youngest dean of UP ever.

During this time, he received several awards for his economic research and teaching. The Business Writers' Association of the Philippines named him Business Leader of the Year 1948 and the Association of Red Feather Agencies named him Civic Leader of the Year 1949. He was also awarded the Community Chest of Greater Manila plaque in 1953 for outstanding service as the founder, first president and first chairman of this society. The Philippine Institute for Public Opinion (PIPO) awarded him the Certificate of Honor for his leadership in business, economy, civil society and politics and for his outstanding services to the youth.

In November 1951 he was elected a member of the Senate and belonged to it until its dissolution after President Ferdinand Marcos imposed martial law in 1973. Most recently he was also President of the Senate from 1968 to 1973.
