Bone marrow cancer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Knochenmarkkarzinose (also Knochenmarkskarzinose , Engl. Bone marrow carcinosis ) is called diffuse or kleinherdige infiltration of the bone marrow with metastasis of a cancer .

description

Bone marrow carcinosis is a complication of bone metastases that occurs in approximately 8 to 10% of all bone metastasis cases. The metastatic cancer cells penetrate the medullary spaces ( substantia spongiosa ) of the bones . This leads to a reduction or even a stop in the formation of blood-forming cells (the latter: terminal myelosuppression ). Correspondingly, bone marrow carcinosis manifests itself through symptoms such as anemia , reduced blood clotting caused by thrombocytopenia and a disturbed immune system (increased tendency to infection caused by leukopenia ). The treatment of bone marrow carcinosis is purely palliative .

diagnosis

Bone marrow cancer can be detected using a bone marrow biopsy. The cancer cells can be seen in the bone marrow smear. Sporadic erythroblasts and immature granulocytes are found in the peripheral blood . The number of reticulocytes is often slightly increased.

forecast

The prognosis for bone marrow cancer is extremely poor. The cancer is already well advanced and a cure is usually no longer possible.
