Knock Castle , also known as Caisteal Chamuis ( Castle Camus ), is a castle on the Isle of Skye, Scotland . It is located on the east coast of the Sleat peninsula , about eight kilometers north of the town of Armadale , on the eastern edge of a small bay that is also called 'Knock'.

history

Little is known about the history of its origins; the complex probably stands on the foundations of an Iron Age dun called Horavaig. Originally owned by the MacLeod clan , it was conquered by Donald MacDonald, together with Dun Sgathaich Castle, following inheritance disputes. Around 1513 Alasdair Crotach MacLeod tried to recapture the castle for his clan, but failed because of the behavior of Mary MacDonald (Mary of the Castle), and the castle remained in the possession of the MacDonalds . A Scottish ballad reports on this.

In the following years the castle was expanded and in 1596 rebuilt on a larger scale. Certainly still inhabited in 1632, it was abandoned in 1689 at the latest. The stones were used to build houses in the area. Today only ruins remain. Knock Castle is registered on the list of Scheduled Monuments and is therefore a listed building.

Mythological

A ghost in the form of a 'Gruagach' is said to walk around the castle . He has the appearance of a green woman and is supposed to be able to indicate future events to the owner of the castle: the ghost appears happy when positive events are about to occur and weeps when bad is threatened. There is also a story about a ' glaistig ' who is said to have looked after the welfare of the cattle.
