Knud Haraldsen Krabbe (born March 3, 1885 in Frederiksberg , † May 8, 1961 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish neurologist . He is the first to describe the metabolic disease Krabbe's disease (globoid cell leukodystrophy).

Life

Krabbe was the son of the doctor Harald Krabbe (1831-1917) and his wife Kristin (1841-1910). The couple had three other children. He visited the metropolitan center in Copenhagen and studied medicine at the University of Copenhagen until 1909 . This was followed by study visits to London and Paris until June 1910 . In 1915 he was with the work Histologiske undersøgelser over corpus pineal (German: Histological studies of the pineal gland ) PhD . He worked as a neurologist in various hospitals and in private practice. From 1931 to 1955 he was a neurologist at Sankt Josephs Hospital in Copenhagen and from 1933 to 1955 he was also a senior physician for neurology at the Kommunehospitalet . In 1949 he was a visiting professor in Reykjavík and in 1950 in Rio de Janeiro .

Knud Krabbe was married to the lawyer Agnete Hindenburg (1883–1961) since 1909. The couple had two daughters.

Act

Krabbe's early scientific interest belonged to the pineal gland , on whose histology he also wrote his dissertation. Later he turned mainly to neuropediatric diseases. In 1916, Krabbe described five cases of a progressive, fatal disease in infants in the journal Brain , characterized by an increase in muscle tone, developmental deficits, fever attacks and opisthotonus . It was the infantile form of globoid cell leukodystrophy, a sphingolipidosis , which today is called Krabbe's disease after its first description .

Later extensive work was devoted to the morphogenesis of the vertebrate brain (Vertebrata).

Krabbe wrote a textbook on neurology that was published several times and was editor of the journal Acta psychiatrica et neurologica from 1926 to 1956, which he founded . He was a member and honorary member of numerous professional societies and honorary doctorates from Lund University (1950) and the Karolinska Institute (1951). He was also Knight of the Legion of Honor (1949) and a member of the Royal Physiographical Society in Lund .
