Masami Kobayashi or Masashi Kobayashi ( Japanese 小林 仁 ; born June 18, 1890 in Yonezawa - han , Dewa Province (today: Yonezawa , Yamagata Prefecture ); † August 7, 1977 ) was a Vice Admiral in the Japanese Navy . He graduated from the Imperial Japanese Naval Academy with a major in navigation in 1917. From June 1, 1925 to April 15, 1928 he was a naval attaché in the United States. He held this office again from 1932 to 1934.

From December 1, 1936, he commanded the battleship Yamashiro . After he had proven himself in this task, he was appointed Chief of Staff of the 4th Fleet on October 20, 1937 and promoted in this position to Rear Admiral. Before the war began, he was promoted to Vice-Admiral in October 1941. From late 1941 to early 1943 he was Commander-in-Chief in the Osaka Guard District. On April 1, 1943 he was appointed Commander in Chief of the 4th Fleet. In 1943 he was responsible for the defense of the Marshall Islands and had his headquarters on Truk , but was also often on Kwajalein . After the American conquest of Kwajalein , he was replaced due to alleged health problems. He continued to serve in the fleet command until 1944 and was transferred to the military reserve on May 31.
