The coalfish ( Anoplopoma fimbria ) is one of two fish species from the Skilfish family (Anoplopomatidae) and the only species in the genus Anoplopoma .
features
Coal fish are a maximum of 1.20 meters long, can weigh over 50 kg and reach an age of over 100 years. They have an elongated body with two dorsal fins separated by a clear gap. The anal fin is symmetrical to the second dorsal fin. Her body is covered with small, slightly ctenoid scales. Young fish under 15 cm in length are blue-black on the top and white on the belly. Animals between 30 and 60 cm in length are often greenish, with a striped pattern on the back. Adult fish are blackish (name) or green-gray on the top, with some lighter spots, and lighter on the belly. There are also different colors, purely yellowish animals or albinos.

Habitat, distribution and living habits
The coalfish is distributed over the entire North Pacific from Japan via the Bering Sea and Alaska to central Baja California and the Isla de Cedros . Its habitat is muddy seabeds at a depth of 300 to 2700 meters. Coalfish predatory feed on smaller fish, krill , jellyfish and cephalopods .

The coalfish is a popular food fish in Japan, its meat has a high content of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids ( EPA and DHA ). When caught, sperm whales are often attracted to feed on the lines.
