The coal ship port in Hamburg-Steinwerder is a port basin on the Norderelbe , which is located between the Köhlbrandhöft in the west and the Kuhwerder Höft in the east. It emerged from the old course of the Köhlbrand , which was relocated to the west after 1910. The coal ship port had a quay on its east side with full gantry cranes (under which railway wagons could run) to discharge the incoming hard coal from England into the coal bunkers on land. A special feature here was that Society Kohlenstauerei of the coal Heber Society and the loading of the ship in the water side lying Light took place. The coal was then brought to the adjacent port basin with the ships lying there for the bunkering of the coal bunker by barges. The coal yards located in the Alster canals were also supplied from here.

Until the 1980s, the grain elevators of the grain elevator company were located in the rear area on the western side . These were used to unload grain ships that were lying on the piles.

In the front area on the west side, the main sewage treatment plant Köhlbrand of the Hamburg city drainage with its egg-shaped sewage sludge tanks made of steel has been located since 1961 .

From 2002, after the relocation and abandonment of the companies based here, the coal ship port was partially flushed with Elbe sand to gain land for the Tollerort container terminal .
