George Holroyd Mills

Air Chief Marshal Sir George Holroyd Mills , GCB , DFC , RAF (born March 26, 1902 in Dartford , England - † April 14, 1971 in Hillingdon , England) was an officer in the Royal Air Force (RAF). After leaving the RAF, Mills sat as Black Rod in the House of Lords until 1970 . He was also the curator of the Imperial War Museum .

Career in the Royal Air Force

In 1920 Mills attended RAF College at Cranwell as a cadet and became one of the youngest alumni from the newly formed college. After graduating, he spent a short time in an RAF arms depot. With the No. 8 Squadron , Mills flew to Mesopotamia in a DH9A . In 1927 he moved to No. 100 Squadron on a Hawker Horsley machine.

In 1935 he attended RAF Staff College . In World War II he commanded No. 115 Squadron and was later called up to the Air Staff at Headquarters Bomber Command to eventually become Station Commander of RAF Watton . In September 1943 he became Director of Policy (General) in the Ministry of Aviation and Air Officer Commanding Balkan Air Force in February 1945.

After the war in 1946, Mills was appointed Director of Plans at the Department of Aviation, and in 1949 Air Officer Commanding No. 1 Group and in 1952 as Air Officer Commanding Air Headquarters Malaya . In April 1953 he rose to Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief Bomber Command. Three years later, Mills became Commander in Chief of the Allied Air Forces Central Europe and Chairman of the Nato Standing Group in Washington, DC

On September 18, 1962, Mills resigned from the Royal Air Force.

In retirement, he sat in the House of Lords as the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod . Mills had two sons, Derek Mills (RAF officer and Spitfire pilot) and Nigel Mills.
