from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Koichi Sugimura (born March 24, 1940 in Japan - † March 9, 2020 in Switzerland ) was a Japanese karateka, karate trainer, head of the Swiss Karatedo Renmei (a Swiss karate association) and official representative of the Japan Karate Association in Europe with Hideo Ochi . He was a holder of the 8th Dan .

Life

Sugimura started karate training at the relatively late age of 16. When asked why he started karate back then, he replied: “It's very simple. I was weak and wanted to be strong! "

He trained as a student of Hirokazu Kanazawa during his law studies at Keiō University (where he later also taught) until he emigrated in the mid-1960s. First he lived in Canada . He later went to Germany , where he taught karate at the University of Freiburg . There he got to know Swiss karatekas, who often trained in Freiburg. Later he gave more and more trainings in Switzerland, where he finally settled. In addition to his coaching and association work, he represented Switzerland as a karateka at international competitions.

He founded dojos in Zurich , Rümlang and Dürnten , which are still among the most successful dojos in Switzerland today. Together with the Dojos Lenzburg, Schaffhausen and Winterthur, he founded the Swiss Karate Association in 1967 and became chief instructor. Before that, the Swiss Karate Dojos were not part of a separate association, but rather formed a section of the Swiss Judo Association.

Sugimura was a trainer well into old age and was in very good physical shape. He was also very active in association life until shortly before his death.
