The Koka Reservoir ( Amharic ቆቃ ሐይቅ ), also called Gelilasee , is a reservoir in the south of Ethiopia , about 75 kilometers south of the state capital Addis Ababa . The dam of the Koka hydropower plant dams the Awash River in the Oromia region into a reservoir.

The mean area of the lake in the African Rift Valley in the East Shewa (Misrak Shewa) zone of Oromia is 180 square kilometers.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 47 m. The length of the top of the wall is 458 m.

Construction began in December 1957 and acceptance took place in 1960. The cost was 30,641,000 Ethiopian birr . The dam was built by an Italian company. It was a kind of aid and a reparation payment from Italy for the period of the Italian occupation of Ethiopia from 1936 to 1941. The building serves both to generate energy and to regulate the Awash River.

Reservoir

At the normal storage target of 1595 m above sea level , the reservoir extends over an area of around 183 km² and holds 1.9 billion m³ of water.

With an area of up to 25,500 hectares, the reservoir ranks 20th among the artificial lakes in Africa. Since the capital Addis Ababa is not far away, Lake Coca is a popular excursion and holiday destination. The lakeshore is surrounded by a wide reed line and provides a habitat for numerous plants, e.g. B. water hyacinths , birds and wildlife.

The lake is rich in fish, the annual catch is around 625 tons, which is about 52% to 89% of the sustainable yield.

The rivers Awash and Modz bring large amounts of sediment, which leads to high algae and plant growth.

power plant

The Koka power plant has a machine with a maximum output of 43  MW . The machine was put into operation in May 1960. The minimum height of fall is 32 m, the maximum 42 m.
