The National Public Security Commission ( Japanese 国家 公安 委員会 , kokka kōan iinkai ) is an organ of the Japanese government for the central monitoring of the police .

It was created in today's form according to the police law of 1954 together with the police authority ( 警察 庁 , keisatsu-chō ). A forerunner of the same name already existed under the Police Act of 1948 to ensure civil control over the police and to limit the power of the former Interior Ministry ( 内務 省 , naimu-shō ). The commission consists of a chairman, who is part of the cabinet as minister of state , and five other members who are appointed by the prime minister with the consent of both Houses of Kokkai for five years. It deals in general with security issues that are the responsibility of the state and in particular with the monitoring of the police authority as a whole: it sets guidelines and appoints the head of the authority, but it has no direct influence on local departments or individual prefecture police forces. Even though she is appointed by the Prime Minister and formally assigned to the cabinet office, she works independently of instructions from the cabinet. The commission is to ensure that the police and their training work in a uniform, efficient and free from political interference.
