The Kokoschka House in Pöchlarn , Lower Austria , is the birthplace of the artist Oskar Kokoschka and houses the OK Documentation Center.

Oskar Kokoschka was born on March 1, 1886 in the house at Regensburger Strasse 29 in Pöchlarn.

In 1973 the "Association for Research and Documentation of Oskar Kokoschka's Work" was founded under the patronage of Oskar and Olda Kokoschka. The seat of the association was Kokoschka's birthplace. The association's task is to present the artist's life and work and to organize a summer exhibition with a Kokoschka connection, alternating every year. This can be viewed from May to September. Since the association was founded, there have been numerous exhibitions in which primarily the graphic work of the artist was shown. In addition, a collection of graphics , sources and photos on Kokoschka was built up.

Conversion and use

This house where Kokoschka was born was purchased by the municipality of Pöchlarn in 1998 and converted and expanded into a modern gallery with a cultural center in the following years . On September 27, 2002 it was reopened as the Kokoschka House. The OK documentation center is still located here. In addition, exhibition rooms for special exhibitions have been created. The focus is on exhibitions related to Kokoschka or his students. There are also exhibitions of contemporary artists . There is also a library on the upper floor and, if necessary, video films about Kokoschka's life and work are shown. The legal entity for the Kokoschka House, which belongs to the Lower Austrian collections and museums , is the municipality of Pöchlarn.

Property inventory

The exhibition center with approx. 300 m² of exhibition space is located in the courtyard wing. The street section houses the tourist information office for the city of Pöchlarn, a shop and the permanent presentation of Kokoschka's life and work.
