Kolding – Egtved Jernbane (KEJ) or Egtvedbanen was the first private railway company in the Danish city of Kolding . The line was opened on May 4, 1898.

history

A route construction was already planned in 1884, but only the Railway Act of May 8, 1894 provided the basis for the construction. The concession to build the line was granted on July 17, 1895. Construction lasted from 1895 to 1898. It was designed as a narrow-gauge railway with a gauge of 1000 mm. The length of the route was 27.8 km, it was approved for a maximum speed of 30 km / h. PVP Berg became the company's operations manager.

For the start of operations in 1897 were of young three Mallet - steam locomotives KEJ 1-3 procured from Germany. These were retired as early as 1929 and when the line was closed in 1930. Two more tank locomotives with the C2 wheel arrangement came in 1929 for the decommissioned Mallet locomotives from Horsens – Tørring Jernbane , which had become superfluous there due to the change of gauge to standard gauge. They were scrapped after they ceased operations in 1931.

The route was initially a great success because far more passengers than expected used the train. But there were too few locomotives and wagons, regardless of whether for passenger or freight traffic. It soon turned out that building a narrow-gauge railway was not a good decision. Reloading the goods in the direction of the state railway DSB was cumbersome. The first decline in the number of passengers and goods carried occurred as early as 1901. During the First World War , the route had a significantly increased volume of traffic. Grain, fodder and fertilizer as well as sugar beet were transported. The company generated profits by transporting the sugar beet , which was processed by De Danske Sukkerfabrikker in Kolding.

The economic situation deteriorated after the opening of Troldhede – Kolding – Vejen Jernbane in 1917 . Another slump took place in 1920 when the railroad's bus companies competed in passenger transport.

The expenses for new equipment and track maintenance made the deficit rise further. Finally, the municipality no longer wanted to bear the losses and ceased operations on May 31, 1930.

route

In 1913, a siding to the dairy and brickworks Skovgård was built in Gravens. The Egtved station had three tracks, a loading track , a roundhouse and a turntable .
