Koliai (also: Koliay , Kolyay , Q (u) liay ) is an oriental carpet - provenance from Persian Kurdistan and thus a rural knot of the Kurds in West Persia. The Kurds of Kordestāns used to live as nomads, but are now settled. They live from agriculture and animal husbandry. The collective term Koliai covers very different carpets of the regional rural population, especially those that are at home in the western provinces of Kordestān , Zanjan and Kermānschāh . What they have in common is that they are high-pile and massively voluminous. Their patterns often consist of geometric figures in muted colors. Patterns with small, diagonal diamonds are also common.

Carpet quality

The execution is robust. The heavy, compact carpets are hard-wearing. The classic dimensions are 150–160 x 300–330 cm. It is therefore a very narrow carpet in relation to the length. The symmetrical or Turkish knot is mainly used . Again and again, woolen fabrics serve as the basis. Older Koliai carpets are mostly knotted on a woolen chain, while younger ones are knotted on a cotton chain. Both have two weft threads between the rows of knots.

Manufacturers often use design-related - unconsciously eclectic - outside of their own region with other provenances. Their imitations, however, have their own character, especially with regard to the colors, which regularly appear very saturated.

The Koliai carpets are also known as Songhur . There are also Bidschar and Senneh .
