The Colony Museum in Leverkusen - Wiesdorf documented everyday life in a Bayer colonies known work settlements of Bayer -Fabrik.

Historical background

In 1912, the Bayer paint factory relocated to Wiesdorf, which is now part of Leverkusen. The company commissioned housing developments for the employees and their families. The first apartments in these so-called colonies were ready for occupancy in 1900 and have been continuously expanded from then on. In 1913 the construction of Colony III began; by 1914 the population of Wiesdorf had increased more than sixfold. In 1922 the three colonies offered a total of 1,968 apartments. This included cultural and leisure facilities and the first Bayer department store .

The colonies have been a listed building since 1997 . In 1999 Bayer sold its rental apartments to the housing association THS . They have belonged to the real estate company Vivawest since 2012 .

History of the museum

The colony museum is located in two of the historic colony houses. It was opened in 2005 at the same time as the Wiesdorfer Neuland Park of the state horticultural show . The house was designed by volunteers renovated and equipped and is staffed by volunteers. The operator is the Friends and Sponsors Association of the Colony Museum Leverkusen eV Between 2005 and 2016, the museum was visited by 22,756 people. As an extracurricular learning location , it has offered a program for schools since 2015.

The Colony Museum would like to give an authentic impression of the living conditions of the employees of the Bayer plant. The Kolonie-Haus at Nobelstrasse 78 is furnished in the style of the 1920s and 30s. The furniture and everyday objects are original pieces. Most of them were donated to the museum by private individuals from the settlement's former workforce.

In the neighboring house at Nobelstrasse 82, the museum shows changing art exhibitions and exhibitions on the history of Leverkusen.
