The Neuland-Park , also Neulandpark , is a park in Leverkusen . It was created in the course of removing contaminated sites on the former Dhünnaue settlement and was opened in 2005 with the state horticultural show .

location

The Neuland-Park is located in Wiesdorf , a district in the west of Leverkusen and on the east bank of the Rhine . The park can be reached via the A 1 and A 59 . The park is located directly at the Leverkusen-West motorway junction. The park can be reached by public transport via the Leverkusen Mitte and Opladen train stations.

history

The 25 hectare area on which the park is located today was a plant landfill of the Bayer holding company between 1923 and the end of the 1940s . Household waste, chemical residues and building rubble were deposited on the facility, so that around three million tons of waste are now stored on the site and the average thickness of the landfill is around eight meters and a maximum of twelve meters. The Dhünnaue residential complex has been built there since the 1950s. At the same time, the Bayer Canoe Club and a restaurant were built on the site and the A1 was built. In 1985, the site became public due to an environmental impact assessment as part of a development plan. The risk assessment showed that the contaminated sites there would have to be secured by a sealing system that had to prevent contact between humans and the ground, as well as preventing rainwater from penetrating the contaminated body and preventing the uncontrolled escape of contaminated soil air from the deposits. In order to be able to secure the contaminated site, the entire residential development had to be demolished and the people relocated. Other buildings, streets and lines had to give way for the sealing construction.

The construction of the waterproofing began in 1995 and was completed after five years. A 3.6 kilometer long and approximately 40 meter deep barrier to the Rhine was built as a groundwater barrier. Bayer AG paid 75 percent of the costs of protecting the contaminated site, and the City of Leverkusen, 25 percent.

Leverkusen applied with the system for the State Garden Show 2005 with the plan to build a park on the Rhine from the protected contaminated area Dhünnaue-Mitte. Due to the circumstances, however, no changes to the terrain modeling were allowed, no deep-rooted trees were allowed to be planted and no artificial water areas were allowed to arise on the site. Leverkusen prevailed with the plans, with 37 offices submitting their designs. The winner was the Brosk office from Essen , whose design lives “on opposites”. Thus, “(s) more slender, almost geometric landscape architecture [...] is contrasted with a natural, harmonious park design [contrasted and reminiscent of] (d) ure the contrast between naturalness and artificiality [...] of the former landfill”.

At the end of 2004, around 150,000 square meters of lawn were sown on the site. In addition, almost 100,000 ground cover and perennials, 85,000 flowers, 22,000 shrubs and more than 1,000 trees and solitary shrubs were planted in today's park. On April 16, 2005, the State Garden Show was opened under the motto Discover new territory . The park has been freely accessible since the end of the garden show. The park is maintained by both the city of Leverkusen and a voluntary community that was founded in 2005.

Investments

The 20 hectare Neuland Park has numerous house and themed gardens. In the boomerang , for example, different garden types are exhibited.

There are five main play and sport areas in the park: There is a large skater facility at the former east entrance, under the motorway bridge. Immediately next to it is a lawn area with playground equipment. At the former entrance to Mitte there is a water play area with fountain hoppers. In the heart of the park, the boomerang, there are twelve play stations. Next to it is a sand playground with climbing gardens and slides. There is a mini golf course in the south of the park.

Numerous new bridge structures were also built in the park for the state horticultural show: One leads over the Rheinallee, one crosses the Dhünn and another leads over the themed gardens. These three bridges are coordinated in their appearance. Another bridge, the Neulandbrücke, leads over the Boomerangweg and continues on Rheinallee. It is located 500 meters from the A1 motorway bridge, is 160 meters long and weighs 100 tons.

The forum bridge serves as a link between the city and the park. It spans the Dhünntal with a length of about 45 meters. The wobbly bridge, a suspension bridge, spans the river Dhünn for a total of 54 meters and continues the curve of the lower boomerang path to the path on the north side of the Dhünn. It consists of a wooden walkway made of larch wood rungs and a 1.6 cm thick polyester Hercules rope with a steel core. The bridge can largely be dismantled.

The 150 meter long, steadily rising St.-Antonius-Steg connects the square at the St.-Antonius-Church with the new promenade on the Rhine. It is planned to install a lift in the pylon that will keep the footbridge free of columns, which would enable a barrier-free bridge over the Rheinallee at this point.

Another building located there is the SparkassenArena, which was formerly called the Stage of Peace . There is space for 1200 people and small and medium-sized events such as concerts, readings, theater and cabaret are held.

There are numerous restaurants in the Neuland Park.
