Bayer AG operated department stores in Leverkusen from 1897 to 2007 under the name Bayer-Kaufhaus . These were initially called “consumer establishments”.

history

The chemical company Bayer, which was founded in Heckinghausen in 1863, gradually moved its production from Elberfeld to the former premises of the Leverkus and Sons company near the small town of Wiesdorf between 1895 and 1900 . At first there were problems finding enough workers. The area around the plant was relatively underdeveloped compared to other towns and villages; it was largely unpopulated wasteland. On behalf of Bayer, Carl Duisberg managed the relocation of the company and the expansion of the adjoining areas that formally belonged to Wiesdorf. In the so-called Bayer colonies, officials' colony (1895–1925, around 100 apartments), Colony I “Julia” (170 apartments), Colony II “Anna” (1900–1925, 1,200 apartments), Colony III “Johanna” (1912–1925 , 1,000 apartments) and the “Eigenheim” colony (1911–1933, around 60 apartments) were built for workers and employees.

In 1897 the first “Consumanstalt der Farbenfabriken vorm” was opened in Wiesdorf an der Hauptstrasse. Friedr. Bayer & Co. ”opened to ensure local supplies for the inhabitants of the colonies.

Main house

The main house ( ) was built in 1911 in the center of Wiesdorf, not far from the town hall . The house was badly damaged in the Second World War and was rebuilt in 1959 with a flat roof . 1970–1971 the sales area was expanded to 6,000 m². In 1988 the building received a new facade.

The main building of the Bayer department stores had a grocery department and all the departments typical of a department store.

On December 22nd, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. the main house closed its doors forever. It was in favor of the new shopping center City Hall Gallery of ECE demolished Group January 2008. At the same time in 1977 were built Wiesdorfer City Hall and in 1953 after plans Cologne architect Fritz Schaller built Wiesdorfer town house demolished. The land on which the town hall and town house buildings were built were sold by the city to the investor. The investor built the Rathausgalerie shopping center and office space on it. Part of the office space was rented to the city of Leverkusen.

Bayer department stores

There were Bayer department stores in Wiesdorf (at Bayerwerk ), Schlebusch ( ), Steinbüchel , Küppersteg , Mathildenhof , Rheindorf ( ), Opladen and Alkenrath ( ) as well as in Cologne-Flittard and Wuppertal (closed in 2001). However, these only offered a full range of foods.

After economic problems arose, these supermarkets were sold to the Spar group. But even with the new owner, the houses could not be run profitably. That is why Spar left the markets after a few years. Only a few shops were rented out, for example in Schlebusch. Some buildings still exist, others were demolished, such as the department store in Alkenrath, where a branch of the supermarket chain Plus (later Netto ) was built.
