features

The Colombian capuchin monkey reaches a head-trunk length of 45 to 50 cm and has a 42 to 45.5 cm long tail. Compared to most other capuchin species, it is relatively light, but darker than the Rio Cesar capuchin monkey ( Cebus cesarae ), which occurs further north . The middle back and the fronts of the arms and legs are reddish and contrast with the rest of the body.

Habitat and way of life

The Colombian Capuchin Monkey lives in lowland forests and palm swamps in the catchment area of the central Río Magdalena and the Río Cauca and extends from the south of the Department del Magdalena to the Departments of Cundinamarca and Tolima in the south. Nutrition, reproduction and other behaviors have not yet been researched in detail.

Systematics

In 1845, the French zoologist Jacques Pucheran described the Colombian capuchin monkey as a subspecies of the white-fronted capuchin ( Cebus albifrons ). It is the sister species of the Rio Cesar capuchin monkey . The two lines separated 300,000 to 120,000 years ago. Both are now viewed as separate species.

Danger

The IUCN considers the population of the Colombian capuchin monkey to be endangered (endangered). Over the past 48 years the population has decreased by 50%. The species suffers from deforestation, is hunted as an "agricultural pest" and caught for the purpose of keeping pets.
