features

Male white-headed capuchin monkeys reach a head-trunk length of 37 to 40.7 cm and have a 39 to 50 cm long tail. No measurements are available from female animals. Among all capuchin monkeys from Venezuela and northern Colombia, the species is the one with the darkest fur. The head cap is cinnamon to dark brown. The back is cinnamon-colored with a yellow-brown tint on the upper back and a sooty tinge on the lower back. The sides are tobacco brown. The shoulders, the outsides of the upper arms, and the insides of the arms and legs are also cinnamon colored. The outsides of the forearms, lower legs, abdomen and lower chest have the tint of burnt sienna . The upper chest area and the insides of the upper arms are reddish-orange. Wrists and ankles and the tops of the hands and feet are reddish brown. The tail is cinnamon colored on top and becomes increasingly lighter towards the end. The underside of the tail is also light.

From the west bank of Lake Maracaibo to the eastern slopes of the Sierra de Perijá in Venezuela, there is a capuchin monkey shape that is significantly lighter than the white-headed capuchin monkey, has reddish limbs and whose body colors are more contrasting. It was described in 1949 by the mammalogen Philip Hershkovitz as Cebus albifrons adustus (as a subspecies of the white-fronted capuchin monkey ). It could be a morph of the white-headed capuchin monkey or a species in its own right.

Way of life

The white-headed capuchin monkey lives in moist lowland rainforests, semi-arid deciduous forests, and mangroves . Nutrition, reproduction and other behaviors have not yet been researched in detail.

Danger

The IUCN does not yet list the white-headed capuchin monkey. There are three protected areas in its range.
