The advantage over the classic sun visor is the infinitely variable adjustment option and thus the universal use for lenses of different focal lengths . Many compendia either have a filter drawer directly in front of the lens connection and / or a device on the front to insert filters or filter foils , masks or backdrops that allow double exposures or create the suggestive impression of a picture through a keyhole or binoculars as a frame.

cinematography

By means of movable flaps, the French flags (usually three wings, one on top, one on each side), the lens is shielded from sunlight or other intense light sources that would lead to image errors such as reflections or a reduction in contrast . The flaps are often combined with an adjustable, conical bellows .

When recording in the studio, the compendium u. U. a teleprompter attached, through which a speaker can look directly into the camera and at the same time read out a mirrored text.

photography

Classic sun visors are usually used in amateur photography and for smaller formats . Compendia only play a role in photography from medium format onwards . The bellows , which can be adjusted in the longitudinal axis (sometimes also in the transverse axis), effectively shields stray light and reflections on the front lens of the taking lens . The compendium is not only used in direct sunlight, but also frequently when several artificial light sources are used in the photo studio .

In the case of view cameras with an adjustable lens standard, the shielding area can be adapted to the adjusted image geometry.
