The house at Breite Straße 17 is a listed building in Wernigerode in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt . The residential and commercial building now houses a restaurant and a guesthouse.

Architecture and history

The building is located on Breite Straße , one of the city's main shopping streets. It is a building from the 19th century that was largely rebuilt after the town fire in 1851. The main building on the street side was rebuilt with functional, simple half-timbering. There is a pointed gable bay window on the roof. The top two floors are covered with wood on the outside. The ground floor is bricked. Today the restaurant "Zum Nicolaiplatz" is located here.

The west side of the building faces Nicolaiplatz, on which the Nicolaikirche was located until 1873, which was demolished due to dilapidation.

The building at Breite Straße 17 was erected for residential and business purposes in place of the previous building destroyed in the city fire. The lower floor was expanded for the public.

Before 1895 the building had the address Breite Straße 191. It was a residential building with side wings on the right and left, courtyard and house garden, three stables (demolished in 1886/87), wash house (also demolished in 1886/87, but new cheese dairy in 1887/87 / Farm building on the right and wash house - this was assigned to the neighboring building at Breite Straße 19 in 1890/91), 1890/91 new construction of stable on the right and defeat / wash house, 1890/91 new construction of carriage shed and defeat / transverse building. The Wernigerode merchant Carl Kahleyss was the owner of the building complex at that time.

In the local register of monuments , the house is listed as a monument under registration number 094 25033.
